If you, like me, have that big nerd energy, then you’ve probably spent a lot of time studying story structure. Which means you’re acquainted with the idea that characters have an external motivation and an internal motivation. You’re not friends with the concept, but you’ve seen it at parties. You’ve nodded at it other across the aisle of the grocery store, and then desperately prayed that it didn’t approach you to have a conversation.

• External motivation is what a character wants, the thing they’re chasing.

• Internal motivation is the thing they need to be the most Oprah version of themselves.

Most of the time, the character knows what they want from the very first page, but have no idea what they really need until much later. The arc is the process of them learning what they need as they pursue the thing (they think) they want. Plus, we get bonus points if the want and the need are in conflict with one another, because that causes natural tension, and tension makes the storytelling part of our brain make that cartoon ‘AWOOGAH’ sound.

But, I’ve always struggled to really make it work for me.

In their book, Scriptnotes, Craig Mazin and John August call bullshit on this view of character motivation. Their feeling is that the want vs need framework is a trap that’s not that helpful for planning a story. In Episode 611 of the Scriptnotes podcast, John and Craig offer a different way in: instead of starting with what a character wants or needs, start with what they’re doing.

They break it down into five base-level things that all creatures do in order to survive: the five Fs.

1. Flee: Run from danger.

2. Fight: Push against a threat.

3. Feed: Consume, hoard, accumulate.

4. Feel good: Chase comfort/relief.

5. [Another word that starts with an F, redacted because my mom reads this]: Pursue desire, connection, intimacy.

Here’s John on feeding:

“Feeding, like literally they could eat, but also, any time they’re trying to hoard or they’re trying to store up or save things, that’s all about feeding. It’s the fear of hunger down the road. Greed is essentially a feeding expression. It’s the desire to accumulate, to have those things. With control of the food, with control of the money, you have power, you have status. These are all tied up together.”

And John on fleeing:

“Obviously, we think about fleeing as it relates to a slasher movie, where you’re running from the killer. But realistically, our characters are often running from something, running from a danger that they may not even be able to say is the danger they’re running from. Characters are always running from something, some version of something that scares them, something about themselves, something about their situation.”

The power of framing motivation this way is that every one of the five Fs is an action, which gives the character something to do in a scene, which means it gives you plot. What sparked my brain was that those base-level motivations are also connected to something deeper in each character… and so perhaps give us a clever way to position the internal motivation (the need).

Listening to this episode, I kept thinking about the horror film Abigail (2024). It’s a vampire movie, and the two motivations driving the story map straight onto the five Fs. Abigail is literally consuming her victims (feeding), and her victims are fleeing from her through the house.

There’s such a clear link between those base motivations and their internal needs: Abigail hungers for the love and affection and attention of a parental figure, and each of her victims are at her mercy because they were avoiding something in their real life.

That’s about when I paused the podcast, and began doing my best Beautiful Mind impression:

The question to ask your own characters

Which F are they doing? Not which F do they feel, which one are they doing, in scene after scene? That’s the base-level motivation generating your plot.

What’s the internal need that F is a distorted version of? The thing they actually need to become whole, but can’t see because the external action feels like it’s working.

The whole point is that the F and the need pull in the same direction. Abigail feeds on blood and hungers for parental love, her victims flee from a vampire and from their own unresolved lives. The character’s arc is them slowly realising that the external version was never going to satisfy the deeper one.

Setting this up in First Draft Pro

Because I’m working on my own novel in First Draft Pro, I keep character notes linked together in my notes folder. I have a note for each character, with the following information:

External Goal

• What does the character do*?

Internal Goal

• What does the character need to be emotionally whole (a distortion of what they currently do)?

Arc

• How does the character grow over the course of the story?

Significant Relationships

• Family, friends, foes (and I tag each one as a helper or hinderer, and then link to that character’s note so that I can navigate between them easily)

*I used to put in what does the character want, but I’m trying this new approach.

When it comes to writing advice, chapter one gets all the love, and the other ninety scenes (as well as the writers of those scenes!) are on their own. There’s no agony aunt column for how to begin scene fifteen or twenty-seven. You sit down and there it is: a blank page.

But, every scene opening, no matter where it sits in the book, has exactly two jobs:

1. To orient: The reader needs to know, fast, who’s in the room and what’s at stake between them, and what the emotional tone is.

2. To pull: The reader needs a reason to keep going. Something is off, something is coming, something has shifted since the last scene. A secret confession. A small forward lean.

Every scene opening you’ve ever read that worked does both of these in the first paragraph or two. Take this example from chapter twenty-seven of Six of Crows:

Where the hell is Kaz? Jesper bounced from foot to foot in front of the incinerator, the dim clang of alarm bells filling his ears, rattling his thoughts. Yellow Protocol? Red Protocol? He couldn’t remember which was which. Their whole plan had been built around never hearing the sound of an alarm.

We know exactly where we are. We know who’s there (and who is supposed to be there, but isn’t!). We’re practically vibrating with Jesper’s anxiety. And we’re pulled in by the fact that things are not going according to plan.

What you’re actually orienting

The part I’ve been thinking about most lately is the orientation bit, and it comes from a slightly weird place.

A couple of months ago I signed up for an improv class, because I wanted to write scenes with better comedic timing. What I didn’t expect was that almost every lesson in that class has turned out to be about how to create a scene between two people, and how to draw the audience in. Making people actually laugh is the bit that you do unconsciously through absurdity or juxtaposition.

The first thing they hammer into you is that a scene is not the room. It’s not the activity. It’s not even what the scene is “about.” A scene is the two people in it, who they are to each other, and how they feel about each other right now. Everything else is set dressing. Relationship and emotion. That’s the start of an improv scene.

That sounds obvious until you’re on stage and realising five minutes in that you’ve set up an entire coffee shop scene and served three customers, but the audience has no idea who these two people are and if they love or hate each other, and the scene reaches this uncomfortable lull. You don’t know what to do next because there was never a relationship for anything to happen to.

The fix is simple but (for me at least) so hard to do in the moment. Before you do anything else, establish three things:

1. Who these people are to each other: Brothers who haven’t spoken in a year. The teacher and the parent who’s about to complain. The ex and the new girlfriend, meeting on purpose. We’re coached to name our scene partner, and the relationship as early as possible.

2. How they feel about each other right now: Resentment, longing, suspicion, embarrassment, the careful politeness of two people who just made up after a fight. The emotion is what makes the relationship matter.

3. A point of view: Having a point of view (ie: a thing you love/hate) helps to make the character unique and believable. It also gives you something to play with, because you can keep bringing your point of view back to focus.

The point of view one is interesting because it reminds me of a piece of writing advice I once read from Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She said that she always tries to give a character three things that they are juggling at any one time: they’re trying to order a sandwich, the deli is unbearably hot, and they’re trying very hard not to let on that they plan to rob the bank down the street in twenty minutes.

What a fun scene to write!

An openings menu

Once you’re holding all that in your head, the objective gets a lot less mysterious. But, I wanted to go a little further, so I looked through some chapter openers to create a little menu of openers:

• Open mid-action: Kaz sped through the upper cells, sparing brief seconds for a glance through each grate. [Six of Crows, Ch 26] — Good for scenes where momentum matters more than mood.

• Open on an object: They’d been blessed with a strong wind. [Six of Crows, Ch 42] — Good for scenes that hinge on a single piece of evidence, gift, or threat.

• Open on a line of dialogue, unattributed: Where the hell is Kaz? [Six of Crows, Ch 27] — Good for scenes that turn on a confrontation or a reveal (and notice this one does relationship work instantly). Whoever says it knows the other person well enough to have an expectation about them.

• Open with a small contradiction: Jesper wanted to pace, but he’d staked out this spot on the bench, and he intended to keep it. [Six of Crows, Ch 23] — Good for scenes that need a low hum of unease.

• Open with summary, then drop in: Everything hurt. And why was the room moving? [Six of Crows, Ch 16] — Good for scenes where the lead-in matters.

• Open after the beat: It took two days after she emerged from the surgeon’s cabin for Kaz to make himself approach Inez. [Six of Crows, Ch 18] — Good for scenes where you want to start inside the wound, not outside it.

• Open on a sensory detail: Kaz woke to the sharp scent of ammonia. [Six of Crows, Ch 3] — Good for scenes that need atmosphere fast.

• Open on a thought: Nina dared one more glance over her shoulder, watching the guards drag Inej away. She’s smart, deadly. Inej can take care of herself. [Six of Crows, Ch 31] — Good for scenes that turn on a decision the reader needs to know about going in.

What I see masterful storytellers (like Leigh Bardugo) doing is picking the opening that matches the job of the scene, and creating variation in how they start each one so that the chapters flow.

How this works in First Draft Pro

The way I’ve built this into my own writing process is through the Story Genius scene outline I already use inside First Draft Pro. Since starting improv I’ve quietly added a small new section at the top of my classic scene card — three lines for relationship, emotion, and POV.

The other thing I’ve been doing, and I’m a little obsessed with it, is using the highlight feature to colour-code my scene openings on an existing draft.

There are eleven highlight colours in First Draft Pro, which is conveniently more than enough to assign one colour per opening style, and I go through the manuscript tagging each opening as I read. The first time I did this, I noticed I had consecutive scenes starting with the same colour. Every scene opened on a sensory detail because that’s my comfort zone.

An overview

The 3 Act Structure for narrative fiction was popularised in the screenwriting world by Syd Field’s 1976 book on screenwriting (which itself has been a fan favourite for the last fifty years). It’s been a staple of story telling for a long time. Understandable, since it’s a useful tool for understanding the basics of how to balance exposition, action and subplots for great story pacing.

Because it’s a classic, I wanted to use this framework as the basis for creating the novel templates in First Draft Pro. But, as it’s been distilled down into a highly simplified model, I always found it difficult to use for actually plotting a story.

So, in the process of creating a system for templates in First Draft Pro, I decided to combine a couple of different structures to create a richer set of guidelines for pacing.

Here’s what that stripped back version looks like:

In order for a framework like this to be more useful for outlining, I needed more information! So I decided to overlay it with the 12 Chapter Outline (a middle grade chapter-book framework) that also follows the 3 Act Structure. Of course, we’re not limiting ourselves to 12 chapters, but in theory we can still map it to the overall structure. I particularly like the 12 chapter outline because of how it handles the obstacles or “battles” that your character faces. This helps us orient big “events” in the story a little more clearly.

I still felt like I needed a little more structure. Save The Cat is an update on Field’s 1976 work, and it’s a modern take on the original structure (though, still 21 years old). The rising action in a modern film is quicker than a novel, and it starts to wrap up faster too. As a result, Act 2 starts at 20% and Act 3 starts at 80%. It otherwise maps quite nicely to the classic structure.

This is what the model starts to look like as we combine them:

This version of the three act structure is what became the foundation for all structure templates in First Draft Pro.

A note on designing with neurodivergence in mind

Writing a book is hard. Particularly if reduced dopamine availability (in the case of ADHD) makes something like... say... a very, very long term goal with no immediate payoff feel impossible.

When working on goals, streaks and the improvements to the dashboard, I thought a lot about what actually helps writers keep showing up for themselves and their big dreams.

I kept coming back to and reading around:

• Reward and motivation

• Consistent effort

• Task initiation and paralysis

• Dopamine feedback loops

• Psychological momentum

• Negativity bias

• Identity reinforcement

Design is about form and function. These concepts really shaped my approach with the revamped dashboard and the goal and streaks feature.

Goals, celebration moments, and designing for delight helps to set-up a dopamine feedback loop, and provides a framework for rewards and motivation. Streaks help to short-circuit paralysis by providing an impetus for task initiation, encouraging consistent effort and creating psychological momentum.

I’ve also always been a strong believer that the look of the software matters more than people think it does. Especially for neurospicy brains, a beautiful interface isn’t fluff. It’s fuel. And it ties into something even deeper: your sense of self.

Being able to show up and write consistently is what makes you a writer, and that, in turn, reinforces your identity and reduces negativity bias.

Everyone’s tastes as a reader (and writer) are different. But for me, whether I’m reading it or writing it: a book has to have a good dollop of humour. I love banter. I live for hijinks. Shenanigans? I’ll take a full helping. And seconds. And thirds.

I want to be able to write great jokes, and I want the humour in my stories to be varied, because sarcastic banter starts to fall flat if it’s the only thing you ever do.

So, in an effort to build my comedy writing skills over the summer, I signed up for a comedy writing class at Boom Chicago in Amsterdam (which has notable alums like Seth Meyers, Jordan Peele, and the Ted Lasso creators).

It was honestly SO fun. Here’s some of what I learned:

How comedy works

A joke is a story, and a punchline is a mini plot-twist. The logic of humour is surprise. You build an expectation… and then you break it. Cliches and stereotypes aren’t funny, because they aren’t surprising. Humour works best when it’s super-specific and relatable.

But, there are many ways to pull it off.

Eight joke formats

1. Set-up / Punchline

The classic structure: introduce an idea or scenario (set-up), then surprise the audience by taking it in an unexpected direction (punchline).

The key is misdirection. You lead the audience to assume one thing, then twist their expectations for comedic effect.

2. Triple / List Jokes

Rule of Three:

Present two items, then hit with a third that breaks the pattern. Start looking out for this in the dialogue of your favourite TV comedies, you'll notice it every episode.

• Normal, normal, random: “I bought bread, milk, and 4,251 gummy bears.”

• Normal, normal, alarming: “I bought bread, milk, and a flamethrower.”

• General, general, super-specific: “She likes music, movies, and the sound of raccoons fighting over pizza twists at 3 a.m.”

List Jokes:

List jokes are like the rule of three, they just extend beyond three items. It works particularly well when the items are wildly different or the list is comically long for no reason.

3. Comparisons

Use similes or metaphors to draw funny parallels.

• “X is like if Y and Z had a baby.”

• “X is like Y: [unexpected twist].”

4. Character

Physicality and character voice are ways to add extra humour. And they don’t have to be cracking jokes and witty retorts. A character that takes themselves extremely seriously, or who is oblivious to the humour in their actions or speech can be very funny in the right context (Think Drax from The Guardians of the Galaxy, or Phil Dunphy from Modern Family).

5. Callbacks

Callbacks create a sense of payoff and are a strong way to close a chapter, sequence, act or the finale. Use a joke or phrase from earlier in your story over again (creating a sort of “in-joke” in the context of your character’s world).

6. Commentary

Step outside the joke to comment on it using a second character. This meta approach can highlight the absurdity or awkwardness of the joke, or help to provide a rounded view if the joke takes a particular angle.

7. Alliteration

Repeat consonant sounds. I don’t know why this works, but it does.

8. Game within a game

This is sort of like a callback in that it creates in-jokes in the context of the novel. Hide wordplay, puns, song lyrics, or quotes within your joke. This adds layers and rewards attentive readers with extra laughs.

Healthy practices for getting ideas

There are four practices that have recently helped me unlock story ideas for little jokes (and “bits” between characters), big plot points, and dialogue.

Feed the creative beast

Before you can dip in to a well, you have to feed it:

• Reading novels in your genre, or screenplays for movies that you love

• Listening to music with strong narrative drive (I like compelling story-centric lyrics and evocative movie soundtracks for this)

• Looking at graphic novels & art, or just sitting outside and watching the way the wind moves the trees

• Talking to friends and strangers, especially about the experiences they have that are different than your own

Morning pages

Anyone who’s read The Artist’s Way will tell you that morning pages—the act of free writing without judgement for 30 minutes every morning—are a staple creative practice. The idea is that it unstoppers the well, and helps get your ideas flowing.

I struggled with them because I felt they made me too internally focused. I’m already an over-thinker. Giving myself a space to overthink on a page just seemed to be counter-productive.

But then, I started reading How To Write Funny by Scott Dikkers. He recommended doing morning pages, but with a twist: instead of free-writing every spiralling thought that came to him, he would nudge his brain to write about things that are funny.

This changed everything for me.

Suddenly, while I’m free writing with no judgement, I’m coming up with great ideas for my work.

There are two aspects to Scott’s process:

• Free writing — 30 minutes per day, without judgement and without editing yourself.

• Curation — Once a week he combs through his morning pages to see if there’s anything in there that’s worth spending more time on.

Clustering

Clustering is a technique I learned in a four week comedy writing workshop I recently finished. It’s like mind-mapping, if mind-mapping was like free writing.

Say you’re writing a romance novel, and one of the scenes is a first date. You take the topic (“First Date”), and then you bullet point everything you can think of related to a first date. What can go right? What can go wrong? What’s funny about first dates? What’s awkward about them?

Then you flesh out each of those bullet points with things you remember from your own life experiences. Jot down as much as possible about the feeling, the thing you wanted in the moment, what caught you off-guard.

Then, edit the list of ideas for the really good stuff. This is what you’ll want to include in your scene.

Quantity

Something I have to keep reminding myself is that good ideas come from having a lot of ideas and picking the best ones. It gets easier to think of new ideas if you’re doing this often.

To practice, set yourself a topic like: Things that go wrong at a birthday party.

And then write a list of 30 things that you can think of. Or 40. Or 50. Push yourself! Bad things, funny things, sad things, things that would make you cry.

Then edit that list.

Idea management in First Draft Pro

But all of that ideation has to go somewhere. For the most part, the place I’m saving this is in the notes folder of First Draft Pro.

Some people don’t write down every idea they ever have, instead believing that if an idea is good enough, it’ll come back to you. I’m not some people. I write down everything.

I like to keep two folders specifically for ideation:

• Sandbox — this is where I do my clustering exercises/ideas lists

• Saved Snippets — this is where I keep collected ideas and observations that I might want to dig into later.

I keep this per project, so that all the notes saved in each folder are relevant to the the project they are saved with.

Why we’ve turned off AI features

Early on in the development of First Draft Pro, AI was everywhere. It was clear that because AI was so new, and because there were no guardrails, that legal and ethical lines were gleefully bounded over in its creation. But, it was also clear that the metaphorical cat had clawed its way out of the bag, and the bag was in shreds. There was no going back.

I wanted to try to assess what was valuable and useful in this new landscape, while protecting the human-essential role of storytelling.

I remember reading a Threads post in 2023 where someone said: “I don’t want AI to love my children for me, I want it to do my dishes”. My early thinking about whether there was an appropriate place for AI in a writing app was along those lines: What’s the equivalent of doing the dishes for a writer, and is there a way that we can use AI to do that? Was there a use for AI that was not creative?

The feature I decided to build was one that updated your outline in line with any changes you’d made to your manuscript. Importantly, it was: 1. non-creative, 2. clearly labeled, 3. optional. I even built an all-off switch that would remove it from the interface in order to be respectful to writers who wanted absolutely nothing to do with it while I explored the question.

There were still ethical and environmental concerns for me. No reasonable person can dispute the fact that AI was made with stolen work. And that theft makes very clear the value that commercial AI companies put on writers and artists. There are two things that are important for training an AI: data and processing power. Nvidia’s stock soared 300% in the first 12 months of the AI boom. Why? Because they paid for the processing power. But, they stole the data (and had the gall to claim they wouldn’t have been able to make the tech if they had to pay for it).

I watched as authors sued for the theft of their work, and was optimistic that courts would take the opportunity to establish guardrails, and set right the wrong that was done when this material was stolen. I (naively, in hindsight) believed that the legal systems would help to define the grey areas in fair use to prevent what is an obvious infringement. That copyright law would be clarified, fair compensation would be given, and that consent would be mandatory going forward.

So, what’s changed?

Two of the copyright infringement cases levelled against two of the biggest players in the commercial LLM space had judgements that came down. And neither of those cases were ruled in favour of the authors. Sigh.

All is not lost. It’s just going to take much longer to establish guardrails. But that is FRUSTRATING, because this was the first opportunity to start to set things right. These cases have been in progress for 2 years, and now it’s going to take longer and be far more expensive for authors to fight for their rights.

I was listening to this episode of Scriptnotes where they talk about the concept of having to “turn it in before it’s done”. You have to stand on stage and say a joke to see if it’s funny. Making an app is a lot like that. One of the hard things about building something in public is that you have to put something in the world that’s in-progress, when you’re still exploring what something means and if it’s even useful. And sometimes that means rolling things back once you decide where you stand.

When we implemented this feature in First Draft Pro, we got a ton of very positive feedback. That’s why it’s taken so long for me to make this call, despite feeling very uncomfortable about it for a long time. I still think that non-creative AI features could have a place in a writing app, but until there’s an ethical alternative, or commercial AI companies begin to respect author copyright, we won’t be building them anymore.

I’m a big fan of books about the craft of writing, but I also love digging in to books about other storytelling crafts for nuggets of advice that can be applied to story-writing.

One of my favourites in this genre is A Practical Handbook for the Actor1, an acting guide from the 80s which has nothing to do with writing, but has everything to do with embodying a character in order to tell a story.

It’s a fascinating look behind the curtain at what goes into an actor’s preparation, but it also made me hyper aware of what my characters are doing in each scene — because they aren’t just standing there delivering quippy lines of banter.

Scene goals and in-scene actions

Every book about writing I’ve ever read has included some guidance on defining the overarching internal and external goal of a character, but they didn’t necessarily explore how that applies on a scene-by-scene basis. Actors, on the other hand, have to have a very granular understanding of goals and in-scene action in order to bring the story to life moment by moment.

What A Practical Handbook for the Actor teaches us, is that an actor decides on the physical action they will take in a scene. The action is something the character is doing to try to achieve their goal, but it’s more about how they are trying to achieve it. And when picking an action, it must not be an errand, or something that can be accomplished in one line. The action must be something that the character might fail at, so that your audience (or in our case, reader) is kept engaged.

For example, a character’s objective in a scene might be to get information out of another character. But you could imagine a big difference in action if the character was pairing threatening physical action in the scene with a gossipy line delivery — like a friend trying to get them to spill the tea (ie, this almost comes across as quite psychotic, and is very reminiscent of a character like Killing Eve’s Villenelle) — versus plying them with the same tone, but offering rewards to try and entice it out of them (which veers more towards Grease’s “Tell me more, tell me more”).

The objective is the same, but the action is very different.

Uta Hagen and the power of conflict

The other thing the handbook teaches is that, while the action depends on their goal, the goal must have to do with the other character in the scene. This idea that a character’s action is dependent on the other character reminded me of a clip I saw a little while ago of actress Uta Hagen (a member of the original cast for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?) giving advice on what to discuss with a scene partner upfront.

She said:

“Discuss what your objectives are, and make sure they’re in conflict. Because, if I say ‘my objective is to get you out of here’, and the other one says ‘my objective is to get out’, well then you’ve got nothing to play, right?”

Tension and conflict are so important to writing a compelling narrative, and it’s super interesting to see how this doesn’t need to mean that the characters are fighting (though it can), but that they are at cross-purposes in some way.

So, lessons

The key to a conflict-ridden scene, with compelling tension, lies in specificity: concrete actions and clear objectives. This is what I’m adding to my scene notes:

• List who’s in the scene.

• For each character, write down what they want in that scene (their objective).

• Make sure at least some of those objectives are in conflict. They shouldn’t all want the same thing.

• Check that each character’s objective is tied to another character. They should want something from each other.

• Make sure each character’s action is something they could fail at. It should take effort and strategy. It must not be an errand.

• Think about how the same objective could be acted out in different ways. For example: threatening vs. sweet-talking.

• Play with tension — let the conflict drive the scene.

I use pinned scene notes in First Draft Pro to keep track of this while writing:

My last missive was a short reference guide for pre-writing and plotting using the Story Genius method, and at the end I included a short how-to for following that process in First Draft Pro.

This week, I thought I’d unpack the other features that I’ve found particularly useful for setting up and planning out a novel in First Draft Pro. You can use these tips whether you’re starting a project from scratch, or importing an existing draft!

1. Notes organisation

I set up folders in the notes section for prewriting, and for scene outlines, and create a note for every scene. If you want a guideline for what to put in each outline note, I’m following this structure from Story Genius:

To use your scene outlines as references while writing, you can link them and then pin them to each chapter.

Linked scenes are visible on the note as well, so you can easily navigate between them.

3. Outline notes

On the outline, I create a scene card for each scene and then note the “Primary Action” from the note for that scene on each card, and keep pacing info and notes I don’t need to refer to that often in the chapter description.

4. Tracking POV

Colour coding is a great way of tracking POV.

I also like to create a plotline for each POV character and organise the scenes for each POV into it’s respective plotline.

5. Scene versions

As you’re drafting, you might find yourself making changes across scenes out of order. Scene-by-scene version history means that the version history for each scene is recorded individually, so you can revert changes on a scene you worked on a few days ago with out it affecting the scenes you’ve worked on more recently.

Depending on where in the world you are, you’re either currently in spring or autumn — both of which are excellent writing seasons! Spring means writing outside from cute cafes. Autumn means cozy writing sessions as the weather cools.

Story Genius, by Lisa Cron, has been so crucial to my current re-write. It’s a particularly helpful book if you love (or struggle with) character development, because it unlocks a method for plotting that takes real care with the internal journey of the character — even if your plot is very externally driven.

But, while I found all the explanation and examples in Story Genius helpful while reading, when I got to applying the principles in the book, I found myself wishing there was a shorter guide that gave me the steps to follow without having to skim through all the other stuff to find the actionable bits.

If you felt like that too, I have good news! I made a pre-writing and outlining guide based on the Story Genius process as I was working through it. This is just my take on the process, and I’d love to hear if you apply anything differently or added anything to your process.

Pre-writing

Pre-writing is the preparation you’re doing to get your thinking to the point where you can begin to outline your story. There are two stages in pre-writing: (1) fleshing out your idea, and (2) defining your protagonist.

Fleshing out the idea

Before you do any plotting, the Story Genius method requires that you first nail down the point of your book. I found it hard to define the reason I wanted to tell the story, so instead I decided to think of it as the lesson that I want my protagonist to learn so that they can be the most Oprah version of themselves.

The way I see it, the “point” is essentially that mind expanding statement that your main character’s therapist would say to them that would crack their entire universe open.

Nailing your point

• When did the idea first come to you? What was the first glimmer? [max 5 paragraphs]

• Why do you care about this story? [max 5 paragraphs]

• What is the point you're trying to make? What do you want readers to leave thinking about? [a few concise lines]

Writing the “What if”

• Write out a 'what if' statement that includes:

  • Context — There’s a historical situation coming to bear on current events

  • Problem (Conflict) — Something has happened, and the protagonist must engage with it

  • Resolution (Consequences) — “But in order to do that…”

  • A hint of surprise — “Too late they realise that…”

• Does this 'what if' help you make your point? OR: Will going though that scenario help your protagonist learn the lesson you want them to learn? Is it the best scenario to teach them that lesson?

Defining your protagonist

The goal is to define a protagonist who will help you make your point. In short, this means that they learn the lesson that your point teaches.

How do they change?

• Re-write your 'point' as the lesson your protagonist learns by the end of the story.

Who are they before the story starts?

Now that you know what they need to learn, imagine them as far away from that lesson as you can — veritable newborn baby in relation to the point you're making.

• Write a thumbnail sketch of who your character is (and why they are the way they are) the day before your story begins.

Why does your protagonist care?

• What do they already what? What did they come into the story caring about? Be specific.

• Why do they want it? What will it mean to them?

• Go deeper: Why will that specific "want" satisfy that specific "why"?

• What misbelief/fear is holding them back?

When did that misbelief first take root? [Origin Scene]

Next, you’ll write the scene from their past where their worldview changed forever, and gave rise to that misbelief. But first, prepare by answering 4 questions:

1. What does your protagonist go into the scene believing?

2. Why do they believe it?

3. What is their goal in the scene?

4. What does your protagonist expect will happen in this scene?

→ Write an origin scene in the first person.

How was that misbelief reinforced? [Crossroads Moments]

Once you’ve written an origin scene, pick three moments in the protagonist’s past that have contributed to that misbelief developing a bit more.

Each of these scenes make the protagonist believe her misbelief a bit harder. Her misbelief feels more true, and holding on to it makes her feel powerful/safe/whole in some way.

→ Write three “crossroads” scenes from the past that reinforce the misbelief.

Scene outlining

From this point of understanding your character, the thing they come into the story wanting [external object of desire], and the misbelief they’re struggling with [internal struggle], you can start to brainstorm scenes that might work for your story.

Story Genius provides a great scene-card structure for this (below), though some terminology, like “alpha point” and “third rail” were not specifically named enough for me. So, I renamed them according to what suits my brain best!

Other recommendations: Outline the opening scene and the ending scenes first, always outline a scene before writing a draft of it, write/draft in chapter/scene order, even if you outline out of order. I also use “atomic stories” to think about pacing in each scene.

Scene Cards

Primary Action [Alpha Point]

The main action that happens in this scene (and why it’s necessary — ie: what opportunity does it present to your protagonist to grapple with their misbelief?)

Sub-plots

The other storylines that this scene moves forward — the most helpful bit of advice about this is to name each subplot in terms of the character who is experiencing it. It makes for a much better short hand!

External Story

• Cause — What happens in the first half of the scene?

• Effect — What is the consequence in this scene of what happens in the first half of the scene? The “and so” bit (see next section) will be the consequence of the scene that happens in the following scene.

Internal Story

• Why it matters? — Why does it matter to your protagonist or for their internal struggle?

• The realisation — What does the protagonist realise because of these events? OR, if the protagonist is not in the scene, what would they realise when they eventually find out?

  • And so? — What will they do (in the next scene) as a result of this realisation?

How to set this up in First Draft Pro

Organise pre-writing & outline scenes in notes

• Create a folder called “Pre-writing”, that contains two notes:

  • “Idea”

  • “Protagonist”

• Create a sub-folder in “Pre-writing” called “Pre-story Scenes”, that contains four notes:

  • Origin Scene

  • Crossroads Scene 1

  • Crossroads Scene 2

  • Crossroads Scene 3

• Create a folder called “Scene Development” with

  • A note called “Ideas List” for jotted down ideas

  • Sub-folders: “In Development” and “Scenes”

Link outlines in your manuscript

Link outlines to your manuscript and pin them in each chapter for easy reference while you’re drafting each scene.

That phrasing burrowed deep into my brain, and has lived there ever since. It’s one of the reasons I love frameworks and guidelines and novel templates — not because these should be followed to the letter, but because they are good to think with.

Thinking about characters

I’ve been thinking a lot about theoretical tools that might be helpful for thinking through characters. Two of my (current) favourite storytelling theory books to think with are The Story Grid, and Story Genius. And lately, I’ve been diving back into these for insights on character creation.

Based on The Story Grid and Story Genius, there are three main requirements for establishing a character:

1. What they want — i.e: their external goal and internal goal (which should be in conflict with each other).

2. How they will transform over the course of your story — this is their arc/journey.

3. What is their misbelief — the flawed way that they see the world as a result of previous trauma that is holding them back from getting what they want, and which will have to transform in order to achieve their objective.

All of this is helpful to define, but it still feels a lot like an unexplored mini-map to me. If everything is blanked out, and I can only see the landscape I’ve already tread, I never really know what my options are. I don’t want to go to a theme-park, only to discover later that there were several rides I didn’t even know about.

The 16 basic desires theory

Enter: Steven Reiss — a psychology professor at Ohio State University, who researched desire in over 6,000 participants in four continents and identified 16 core desires that motivate human behaviour.

These desires are intrinsic motivations — things people pursue for their own sake rather than as means to another end. We pursue ALL sixteen simultaneously, but individuals prioritise them differently.

So, I wondered if the desires a character prioritises could be used as a tool when defining that character’s goals, misbelief and character arc:

• Which one of the 16 desires does a character prioritise as number 1?

  • Why that one, and why is that the priority right now?

• What misbeliefs are most likely to be a factor for that desire?

• What transformation would be necessary to overcome each misbelief?

Essentially: Can Reiss’ 16 desires unfog the map in the character creation theme-park, so we know what our options are going in, and we can make choices that better serve our story?

LET’S FIND OUT!

Using desire priority to define a character

While each character will pursue all of these desires to different degrees, they are going to be prioritising a couple. My theory is that the desire that they are prioritising above all else (Number 1) will be the one that aligns with their external goal.

This is helpful to know, because if you know what they’re going after, you can use the aligned core desire to define a misbelief, internal goal, and arc that serves the story. Or, if you have an idea of what basic desire is most interesting for you to explore, you can use it to identify storytelling opportunities that help you hone in on that.

Acceptance

The desire for approval, and self-worth

External Goals: Joining an exclusive group, winning a competition for recognition, gaining admission to a prestigious institution, forgiveness for a past transgression.

Potential Misbeliefs1: "I must change who I am to be worthy of love," "My value depends on others' approval,” "Rejection means I'm fundamentally flawed."

Character Arc2: A character driven by acceptance might begin by contorting themselves to please others (Inciting Incident: a significant rejection). As they pursue external validation, Progressive Complications arise when their people-pleasing behaviours create more problems than they solve. The Crisis forces a choice between authenticity and approval. The Climax shows them either embracing their true self despite rejection or continuing down a self-destructive path of seeking validation. The Resolution reveals the consequences of their choice — either newfound self-acceptance or continued emotional dependency.

So: Rejection → External Validation → Authenticity → Self-acceptance

Power

The desire for influence, leadership, and mastery

External Goals: Gaining political office, becoming CEO, defeating a rival, achieving leadership position.

Potential Misbeliefs: "Power is the ultimate goal," "You're either a winner or a loser," "Compassion is weakness," “I don’t deserve real power,” “I’ll never be truly powerful.”

Character Arc: A power-motivated character begins seeking control (Inciting Incident: loss of power or authority). Progressive Complications arise as their pursuit of power leads to isolation and moral compromise. The Crisis presents a choice between power and relationships/principles. The Climax shows their decision to either redefine success beyond power or continue a lonely climb. The Resolution reveals the consequences for both their influence and humanity.

So: Subjugated → Powerless → Powerful → Superpowered

Curiosity

The desire for knowledge and understanding

External Goals: Solving a mystery, making a scientific discovery, investigating a historical event.

Potential Misbeliefs: "Knowledge is always beneficial regardless of cost," "The truth must be uncovered at any price," "Understanding everything will bring happiness."

Character Arc: A curiosity-driven character begins with an insatiable need to know (Inciting Incident: discovery of a mystery). Progressive Complications arise as their pursuit of knowledge leads to increasingly dangerous or morally ambiguous situations. The Crisis presents a dilemma between pursuing truth and protecting themselves or others. The Climax shows their decision to either temper curiosity with wisdom or be consumed by it. The Resolution demonstrates how this choice has transformed their relationship with knowledge.

So: Curious/Naive → Learning → Understanding → Wisdom

Family

The desire to raise children and spend time together

External Goals: Reuniting estranged family members, protecting family from external threats, creating a meaningful legacy.

Potential Misbeliefs: "Family loyalty trumps all moral concerns," "I must sacrifice everything for my family," "Blood ties are the only relationships that truly matter."

Character Arc: A family-focused character begins with unwavering dedication to family obligations (Inciting Incident: a family crisis). Progressive Complications arise when family demands conflict with personal needs or ethics. The Crisis forces them to choose between blind family loyalty and personal integrity. The Climax shows their decision to either redefine family bonds or remain trapped in unhealthy patterns. The Resolution demonstrates the impact of this choice on both their family relationships and individual fulfilment.

So: Toxicity → Self-sacrificing → Boundaries → Balance

Idealism

The desire for equality, social justice, and the pursuit of altruistic goals

External Goals: Leading a social movement, changing an unjust law, exposing corruption.

Potential Misbeliefs: "The ends always justify the means," "People who disagree are morally inferior," "Perfect justice is achievable."

Character Arc: An idealistic character begins with passionate commitment to a cause (Inciting Incident: witnessing injustice). Progressive Complications arise as their pursuit of justice leads to difficult moral compromises. The Crisis forces them to confront the gap between ideals and implementation. The Climax shows their decision to either embrace a more nuanced approach or become the very thing they fight against. The Resolution reveals how this choice affects both their cause and their humanity.

So: Distopia → Injustice/Inequality → Justice/Equality → Utopia

Independence

The desire for self-reliance, autonomy, and individuality

External Goals: Living self-sufficiently, starting a business, breaking free from controlling relationships.

Potential Misbeliefs: "Needing others is weakness," "I must do everything alone," "Vulnerability threatens freedom."

Character Arc: A fiercely independent character begins by avoiding dependence at all costs (Inciting Incident: a situation forcing collaboration). Progressive Complications arise as their isolation creates new problems. The Crisis presents a choice between maintaining absolute autonomy and accepting healthy interdependence. The Climax shows their decision to either open themselves to connection or retreat further into isolation. The Resolution demonstrates the consequences of this choice for their freedom and relationships.

So: Dependent → Healthy Interdependence → Independent → Isolated

Order

The desire for structure and organised systems

External Goals: Creating a perfect system, restoring order to chaos, establishing clear rules and procedures.

Potential Misbeliefs: "Control equals safety," "Uncertainty is always dangerous," "Everything has one correct place."

Character Arc: An order-seeking character begins with rigid need for structure (Inciting Incident: unexpected chaos disrupting their system). Progressive Complications arise as their attempts to control everything actually create more disorder. The Crisis forces them to choose between their need for certainty and adaptation to unpredictability. The Climax shows their decision to either embrace flexibility or double down on control. The Resolution reveals how this choice affects their ability to navigate an inherently unpredictable world.

So: Uncertainty → Disorder → Order → Control

Physical Activity

The desire for exercise and movement

External Goals: Winning an athletic competition, completing a physical challenge, achieving physical transformation.

Potential Misbeliefs: "Physical prowess determines my worth," "Showing any weakness is unacceptable," "My body defines who I am."

Character Arc: A physically-driven character begins with identity centred on physical ability (Inciting Incident: injury or limitation). Progressive Complications arise as their physical focus is challenged by circumstances beyond their control. The Crisis forces them to choose between defining themselves solely through physical achievement or developing other dimensions of identity. The Climax shows their decision to either evolve beyond physical definition or remain limited by it. The Resolution demonstrates how this choice shapes their self-concept and goals.

So: Inactive → Challenged/Limited → Diligent → Physical Triumph

Romance

The desire for courtship, beauty, and intimacy

External Goals: According to Gwen Hayes’ Romancing the Beat, the goal in a romance is connection.

Potential Misbeliefs: "I’m not worthy of love," "Real love is a fantasy," "Love makes you vulnerable."

Character Arc: A romance-focused character begins believing that they don’t need, or want, love/connection (Inciting Incident: meet cute). Progressive Complications arise as their misbelief clashes with the reality of falling for someone. The Crisis forces them to choose between their misbelief and authentic connection. The Climax shows their decision to either embrace vulnerability and connection or continue in their misbelief. The Resolution demonstrates how this choice affects their capacity for genuine love.

So: Out Of Love → Running → Falling → Wholehearted/In Love

Eating

The desire for food, nourishment or consumption

External Goals: Becoming a renowned chef, winning a culinary competition, preparing a special meal, finding/growing food in a scarce environment.

Potential Misbeliefs: "Food is the only reliable source of comfort," "Providing food is the only way I can show love."

Character Arc: A character motivated by eating might begin with an unhealthy relationship with food or the preparation of food (Inciting Incident: a culinary failure or revelation). Progressive Complications arise as their fixation creates conflicts in other areas of life. The Crisis forces them to confront the emotional issues they've been avoiding through food or cooking. The Climax shows their decision to develop a healthier relationship with eating/cooking. The Resolution reveals how this transformation affects their life and relationships.

So: Fixation → Avoidance → Shifting Worldview → Balance

Saving

The desire to collect and preserve

External Goals: Building wealth, completing a valuable collection, preserving artifacts.

Potential Misbeliefs: “The more I have, the safer I am," "Letting go means losing control," “ Other people can’t be trusted with this, only I can keep it safe.”

Character Arc: A saving-oriented character begins with strong attachment to a collection/object/possessions (Inciting Incident: threat to their collection/resources). Progressive Complications arise as their saving behaviour restricts other aspects of life. The Crisis forces them to choose between holding on and letting go. The Climax shows their decision to either redefine abundance beyond possession or remain defined by what they own. The Resolution reveals the impact of this choice on their security and freedom.

So: Holding On (Control/Safety) → Uncertainty → Letting Go → True Abundance

Social Contact

The desire for friendship and community

External Goals: Being popular, creating community, finding authentic friendship.

Potential Misbeliefs: "Being alone means being unloved," "Quantity of relationships matters more than quality."

Character Arc: A socially-motivated character begins seeking connection at any cost (Inciting Incident: significant social rejection). Progressive Complications arise as their pursuit of acceptance leads to superficial relationships. The Crisis presents a choice between authenticity and popularity. The Climax shows their decision to either cultivate meaningful connections or continue collecting shallow relationships. The Resolution demonstrates how this choice affects their sense of belonging.

So: Isolation → Rejection → Connection → Belonging

Status

The desire for importance, attention, respect and social standing

External Goals: Achieving fame, gaining prestige, moving up social hierarchy.

Potential Misbeliefs: "Worth is determined by social rank," "Appearances matter more than reality," "Others' opinions matter more than my own opinion."

Character Arc: A status-seeking character begins pursuing external validation (Inciting Incident: status loss or humiliation). Progressive Complications arise as their focus on appearances creates internal emptiness. The Crisis forces them to choose between authentic accomplishment and superficial recognition. Tranquility

The desire for safety, and an absence of fear and anxiety

External Goals: Creating a safe haven, escaping danger, finding inner peace.

Potential Misbeliefs: "All risk must be avoided," "Safety requires isolation," "Peace means absence of conflict."

Character Arc: A tranquility-focused character begins avoiding all discomfort (Inciting Incident: unavoidable danger). Progressive Complications arise as their safety measures create new problems and limitations. The Crisis presents a choice between growth through discomfort or stagnation through safety. The Climax shows their decision to either embrace necessary risk or retreat further. The Resolution demonstrates how this choice affects both their security and fulfilment.

So: Avoidant → Risk → Growth → True Security

Vengeance

The desire to confront, defeat, and get retribution or revenge

External Goals: Defeating a rival, exposing a wrongdoer, achieving justice for past wrongs.

Potential Misbeliefs: "Justice requires punishment," "The score must always be settled," "Forgiveness means weakness."

Character Arc: A vengeance-driven character begins seeking retribution (Inciting Incident: significant betrayal or injustice). Progressive Complications arise as their pursuit of revenge consumes them and creates collateral damage. The Crisis forces them to choose between vengeance and breaking the cycle. The Climax shows their decision to either pursue healing or continue seeking retribution. The Resolution reveals how this choice affects both their sense of justice and ability to move forward.

So: Injustice → Revenge → Balance → Justice

Honour

The desire to maintain an upright character, moral code, or loyalty

External Goals: Upholding a sacred promise, doing the right thing (whatever that means to them), living according to a strict moral code.

Potential Misbeliefs: "Honour requires absolute perfection," "Compromise is always weakness," "Traditions must never change."

Character Arc: An honour-driven character begins with rigid adherence to a code (Inciting Incident: a situation challenging their principles). Progressive Complications arise as their inflexible standards create conflict in a complex world. The Crisis presents a dilemma between adhering to the letter of their code and its spirit. The Climax reveals their choice to either evolve their understanding of honour or remain imprisoned by rigid thinking. The Resolution shows the consequences of this choice for their integrity and relationships.

So: Dishonoured → Rigid Adherence → Morally Conflicted → Honourable

Atomic stories

There are a lot of incredible books on writing, each with own set of tools to help us get better at our craft. One of my favourites is The Story Grid, by Shawn Coyne.

The Story Grid helps you to analyse your stories with an editor’s eye, figure out what's working, what isn’t, and why. And possibly most important of all: how to fix it.

When I first read it, there was this bit about the atoms that make up each beat of a scene that changed everything for me about outlining individual scenes. My constant problem with scenes was knowing if I’d done enough, and if the scene was doing the work it needed to do.

I recommend reading this entire book (it’s full of nuggets), but this is how I outline scenes as a result of what I learned from it:

Three atomic pairs

Just like your full novel project contains three acts, Coyne explains that that same structure holds at the scene level as well.

Each part has two story atoms inside it. I like to think of them as atomic pairs.

• Beginning — Setup & Catalyst [25% of the scene]

• Middle — Complication & Crisis [50% of the scene]

• End — Climax & Resolution [25% of the scene]

It’s clear to see how this structure ensures that tension ramps up over the course of a scene. I use it to make sure that enough is happening, and that the pacing from the set-up of the scene to the resolution works.

But that’s not the part of the framework that I love the most. That bit comes next.

The atomic particles

Coyne also digs in to the make-up of the catalyst, complication, and crisis in a way that makes it so much simpler to outline a scene effectively.

Catalysts have two types. They are either causal, or co-incidental. A causal catalyst happens as a result of something your protagonist did. A co-incidental catalyst is more like an act of god.

Why is this important? Because you want to make sure that you don’t have only one type of catalyst in every scene. It’s more interesting if you find a way to alternate or mix them up a bit.

Complications in your scene are the first ramp up of tension following the scene catalyst. They always resolve in one of two things: either your character will take action, or they will realise something that changes how they move through the rest of the scene.

Crisis moments are right before the climax, when the tension is ramped all the way up. But Coyne shows us that the end of every crisis moment results in a choice. And that that choice is quite specific. Either, the protagonist will have to choose between two bad options (the lessor of two evils), or they will have to choose between two equally good options that are mutually exclusive — so they can’t have both (a trade off).

How has this changed my outlining?

All through a story we’re essentially just playing with tension. Ramping it up and releasing a bit, and ramping it up again. What I love about this framework is that it gives you the tools to see how to execute a very specific tension goal in the scene.

If I’m outlining a scene where I want to increase tension, I find that a causal catalyst, a complication resulting in a character action, and a crisis resulting between two bad options is a recipe for maximum tension ramp up.

A coincidental catalyst, on the other hand, is a problem that needs solving, and it can be something terrible. But, it’s not also the character’s fault. There’s less opportunity for angst.

Similarly, a complication that results in a character revelation feels like progress. Even if the revelation is bad news and ultimately increases the overall tension in the story, the discovery feels like a small win. So, that’s a small tension release.

A choice between two mutually exclusive good options is bittersweet, but far less bleak than a lessor of two evils choice.

In short: I think Coyne’s framework helps us to identify what we need to do in a scene in order to make it feel the way we want it to feel to the reader. And knowing this helps me plan for that feeling in advance.

App improvements (v 1.0.71)

Version 1.0.71 is one of those updates where we’ve done a ton of work, and if we did our job correctly, you won’t notice any of it (like really good stage lighting)! Much of this work was to set up structures that will allow us to do a ✨full dark mode✨ later in the year (so keep an eye out for that!)

Things you might actually notice:

• Scrollbars on project settings — When project descriptions are long, you can now scroll down and your settings are not cut-off. Crucially this means you no longer have to use a browser zoom work around to find the delete button for a project.

• Improved UX on smaller screens — We made a big change to how page zooming is handled to make the app more user-friendly on smaller laptop screens (13”) and on iPad in landscape mode.

• Left/right scroll improvements on the outline — We tweaked the left/right scrolling so that when your mouse is in the scroll zone, it doesn’t disable other buttons near to it. Because that was annoying :)

Once again, a massive thank-you to everyone on a paid subscription, you literally make these improvements possible and we all love you.

Feedback and feature requests

If the idea of starting a novel project seems daunting — or you just need a little brain break from the process without losing any of your writing muscle — a short story project can be a very helpful creative outlet.

It’s also a great way to explore interesting tropes or elements from other genres with a similar flavour profile to your typical genre choice. You could try to blend more horror elements into your fantasy, for example. Or experiment with noir in your mystery.

Stephen King described a short story as “a quick kiss in the dark from a stranger”, but that sounds like a horror story all on it’s own to me. I’d rather imagine the short story as a private cake tasting, an unlocked playground, or a box of those fancy chocolates that come with a booklet of tiny flavour labels.

The Lester Dent formula

Lester Dent is the master of pulp fiction. He's known best for his Doc Savage novel series, and his short fiction formula – which is particularly useful for writing well-paced short stories of around 6000 words.

If you want the high-level summary, Michael Moorcock wrote a great one:

Split your six-thousand-word story up into four fifteen hundred word parts. Part one, hit your hero with a heap of trouble. Part two, double it. Part three, put him in so much trouble there's no way he could ever possibly get out of it... All your main characters have to be in the first third. All your main themes and everything else has to be established in the first third, developed in the second third, and resolved in the last third.

Using the short story template in First Draft Pro

First Draft Pro’s short story template is based on the Lester Dent structure, and includes guides for writing each of the four parts outlined in Moorcock’s summary.

Here’s a video overview of how to set-up a short story project in First Draft Pro.

My main recommendations are:

1. Turn off chapter numbering in your project so that each “chapter” acts as a single story, with the chapter title being the story title.

2. Treat the scene cards as each of the “parts” in your story — so four scene cards per story.

3. Create a notes folder for each story so that you can easily find reference material when you’re looking for it.

One of the earliest recorded personal New Year’s resolutions appeared in the diary of a Scottish writer, Anne Halkett, who wrote “I will not offend any more” on a page titled “Resolutions” on the 2nd of January 1671 — 354 years ago today.

I hope she broke that resolution (for the plot if nothing else).

Regardless, I’ve always been drawn to the magic of a brand new year and setting intentions for months to come.

Burning to be better

There’s a poem I love by Andrea Gibson, which has absolutely nothing to do with the new year or with resolutions, but that has a bit in it that I can’t help but think about at this time of year:

'cause that's how I found you—
lifting the spirits of everyone around

like a hot air balloon
just from the way you burned 
to be a better person today

than you were the day before.
Burning to be better is my favourite
quality on anyone, and you are on fire

This is how I think about the new year. It’s the time of year when we’re alight — all burning to be better versions of ourselves.

Begin as you mean to go on

Whether you’re burning to finish a draft, refine a draft, or begin something new entirely, the best advice I’ve read is to begin the year as you mean to go on.

Add a little to your wordcount. Refine your outline. Make a video to promote your book. Spend time developing your system of magic, or drawing a map of your world, or cracking the spine on a brand new notebook (that you’ll later decide is too pretty to actually use).

It’s like a little spell you’re casting out into the world. A way of actually committing to the intention, rather than simply writing it down.

Consistency is magic

Don’t overthink it, though. Terry Pratchett only wrote 400 words per day, on average. He wrote more than 50 books.

He’s proof that you don’t have to hit massive wordcounts, do writing challenges, or go on writing retreats to achieve your writing goals. A consistent, sustainable writing practice is enough. Consistency is magic.

Highlights in First Draft Pro

This feature was requested by one of our book coach partners, who uses FDP’s collaborative toolset with their authors to nurture their stories as they come to life. That means they give a LOT of feedback, and sometimes comments alone aren’t enough.

They wanted to be able to use colour-coded highlights to convey information about certain sections of text. Challenge accepted.

We needed to make sure highlights would be beautiful and functional (in line with our design values). That meant we needed to make a few changes to the app to make sure that highlights would look great in both light and dark mode.

Read the help article to learn how to add, remove and change the colour of highlights.

Other improvements (v 1.0.69)

• Fixed Toolbar Flicker — We fixed a bug that made the tool bar flicker when highlighting text. This now works really smoothly.

• Fixed Chapter Menu Visibility — We changed the colour of the menu icon (three dots) on chapters so that you can more clearly see how to delete or add new chapters.

• Magic Em Dashes & Arrows — We added shortcuts so that a double hyphen (- -) will turn into an em dash (—); and a hyphen and greater than symbol (->) will turn into an arrow (→) when writing anywhere (including the outline). See all special punctuation shortcuts (there are 20!).

In the Northern hemisphere, the weather has started to turn. Mists have begun to gather over your favourite bodies of water. Leaves are throwing themselves to the ground in oh-so-dramatic faints. In the Southern hemisphere, the weather has started to turn. Sunlight glitters over your favourite bodies of water. Leaves gossip under their breath to each other in the summer breeze.

Regardless of which pole you lay your laptop closest to, it’s beginning to feel a lot like it’s time to make some proper progress on writing projects before the year hurtles to a close (or is that just me?).

At the same time, the last few weeks of the year also make my brain feel as if it’s started to blur at the edges, and the words feel very hard won.

My self-prescribed cure? Something lighthearted and fun to unblock our metaphorical creative tap.

Without further ado, here are 30 writing prompts to spark creativity and inspire plot! You can use them as warm up exercises, or to unstick yourself if you’ve become stuck on a scene. I don’t know if you can tell, but I’m the latter.

30 unserious writing prompts for the seriously stuck writer

• Write a scene that begins with a party, from the point of view of a character who was definitely not planning to be there.

• Have one character make another character really irate. Maybe they have an annoying habit that drives them to distraction. Does anyone else notice it? Do they feel like they’re going mad? Are they actually going mad?

• Have one character confront another, and have the second character deny whatever they’re being accused of outright in the most hilarious way you can think of (with a mouth full of jelly beans? while trying to hide the thing they are being confronted about?)

• Write a scene in which someone tells an absurd lie and gets away with it.

• Begin a paragraph with: “It didn’t seem like much at the time. It also wouldn’t seem like much later, but…”

• Have a character spend far, far too long deciding on a sandwich.

• Look up the lyrics of the last song you listened to. Use the lyrics from the fourth line of that song as your prompt (mine is: "They say looks can kill and I might try").

• Set something on fire.

• One of your characters discovers an object that was hidden away many years ago. For very good reason.

• Someone gets stabbed in the back. Literally or metaphorically – your choice.

• Have one of your characters guide the others through a task/challenge as if it were a how-to. Think: The Dummies Guide to Battle Magic, or similar.

• Include a reference to every one of your protagonist's senses in your next scene (ie: they see something, hear something, taste something, smell something, feel something).

• Subvert a common stereotype for one of your characters.

• One of your characters cracks open a fortune cookie...

• Someone forgets their glasses/contact lenses, and hijinks ensue.

• Write a scene that takes place in either intense heat or intense cold. Try to make the action something that would ordinarily not happen in this type of environment.

• Two of your characters have a blowout argument.

• Start a sentence with "[Character name] was not sorry."

• One of your characters ends up on the evening news, and is not pleased about it.

• Whatever happens, by the end of your scene, make sure every single plate/glass in your characters' current location (a house, a pub, a restaurant, a shopping mall, a spaceship) is broken.

• Your protagonist either receives or sends a ransom note.

• Write a scene from the perspective of the antagonist.

• One of your characters is forced to swallow their pride and do something they really don't want to do.

• Write a scene in which a teacup plays a crucial role.

• Someone is caught in a bald-faced lie.

• Begin a scene with the sentence: "That was/wasn’t the first time [Character Name] [extreme action]."

• One of your characters gets advice from a completely unreliable source, and are convinced to take it.

• Begin a scene by describing two hands.

• Write a scene in which something happens in slow motion.

• Have one of your characters start a conversation with: "I've never told this to anyone..."

The process of writing a book is as individual as we writers ourselves. Some people jump straight in and see where their imagination takes them. Others prefer to plan meticulously before putting pen to proverbial paper.

Some people are linear writers, starting at the beginning, and going until they reach the end. Others are so not (I’m the problem, it’s me).

While there's no right way to write a novel, today I'll be covering some of my favourite First Draft Pro features to help you develop your concept, finish your first draft, and polish your manuscript to perfection.

Writing made easy with First Draft Pro

It’s no secret that I started designing First Draft Pro out of a feeling of deep frustration with the other options out there. Either the software looked great, but writing a 100,000 words in it felt clunky and I kept having to turn to spreadsheets to try and figure out what I was actually working towards, or it felt like an uninspiring “place” to be spending so much of my time.

So, I set out to design an app that was:

1. Beautiful (because I’m petty and shallow like that)

2. Actually made for writing long projects (ie: not designed for corporate offices)

3. As great for pantsers as it was for plotters, and for linear writers as it was for non-linear writers

A home for all your notes

The start of a book is an amorphous thing – a jumble of notes, some snippets of overheard dialogue, and perhaps a character sketch or two. FDP's notes features help you organise your worldbuilding notes and research in one place, making the transition from idea to reality as seamless as possible.

• Space for brainstorming. Just get those ideas out of your head and onto the page! There's no rulebook or imposed structure for note taking in FDP, so you can organise your notes in whatever way feels right for you.

• Weave your notes into your story. Link notes into your manuscript for easy reference – simply highlight your text and link the relevant note you want to keep handy.

Have a draft already? If you have an existing manuscript in a .doc or .docx file format you can import it straight into FDP.

Map out your plot

Whether your prefer to plan your plot meticulously or let your narrative emerge organically, FDP’s outlining tools can help you find the shape of your story.

• Create a framework for your story. The outlining feature allows you view each scene and chapter as a separate card. This makes it easy to either plan your plot in advance, or reorder it later using auto-summarisation – whichever best suits your writing style.

• Use plotlines to manage your pacing. Switch between a chapter-by-chapter overview, and an overview of your novel outline broken down by plotline. This helps you see if you’re missing any obligatory scenes for a particular sub-plot.

Today we’re diving into building a writing habit (and my productivity tips, such as they are), how to get access to the chat feature and support, and an app update with improvements for suggestions & comment threads, and importing documents.

Building a writing habit (my productivity tips)

Focus and staying motivated while writing has been one of the problems I’ve tried to make easier to manage with First Draft Pro (with features like daily wordcount goals and focused writing mode).

But, I still find that I need to have systems in place to help me make the most of my time and energy if I want to have a consistent (and sustainable) writing practice.

These 10 tools, practices and systems are the ones that have helped me to work consistently and sustainably on both my writing projects and building First Draft Pro. Some of them might also work for you.

1. I do a time vs energy audit

One of the ways I try to combat my time-blindness is to calculate how many productive hours I will have in a week (given any other personal obligations). I call these hours my "spoons", and anyone who has strong opinions about cutlery will know: not all spoons are created equal.

Some hours are better for certain types of work than others, so I allocate each task or project its spoons based on how much of myself I will need to give. This helps me manage my time more intentionally and avoid overcommitting.

2. I block-off writing time (and try to protect it)

I schedule my writing time. This is the best way for me to make sure I stick to it, and I try very hard to protect it. Usually it’s in the morning, and usually right after I eat and caffeinate, because that’s when my brain is at its best.

But, I don’t always have the luxury of giving my book my best brain, sometimes other things demand it. The goal is to (1) schedule it, and (2) try to schedule it at a time when I can bring my best possible brain to the work given other responsibilities.

3. I have a ‘bookmark habit’

I love the concept of bookmark habits, and I use them for everything. The idea is that you create a lowest possible requirement for considering the habit maintained (i.e. you kept your place). Say for example you want to run every day. But, sometimes stuff gets in the way. Your bookmark habit might be a quick walk, or even just putting on your running shoes.

Despite my best intentions, sometimes protecting my writing time doesn’t work. Life will life. My bookmark habit is to open the project daily. It sounds small, but just seeing the manuscript and outline in First Draft Pro helps to keep the story alive in my mind.

4. Banish distractions

I set my phone to a "writing focus mode" while writing, which blocks access to distracting apps. This helps me stay off social media and keeps me in the zone. In theory. It doesn’t always work.

If I find myself picking up my phone a lot, I sometimes need to put it in another room (or give it to my husband to Smaug over until I finish what I need to finish).

I’ve also found a cube timer really helpful for staying on task!

5. Train your brain with music (from video games)

I use a focus playlist that I’ve trained myself to be productive on, Pavlovian style. I’m not allowed to listen to this playlist unless I’m doing deep work. The result is that it helps put me in the zone almost immediately.

Another tip: I use music from video games for this playlist. This is something I learned ages ago from someone on Reddit: Video game music is split into two types: field/travelling music and boss fight music. Field/travelling music is music designed to keep you focused as you navigate the game. It’s soothing, but keeps your brain active, curious and engaged. Boss fight music is designed to spike your adrenalin.

So: I actually have two playlists (mostly compiled of music from Hollow Knight, Ori, and Moonlighter).

• Field Music: I use this for deep, focused work because it helps my brain stay active without pulling my attention away.

• Boss Fight Music: This playlist is for when I’m under a deadline or need to get something done fast. The change in tempo and intensity helps me focus on high-pressure tasks.

An exception: Sometimes I need to focus, but the vibe of my focus playlist is not the vibe I’m going for in a scene. Soothing music isn’t great if you’re trying to write a tense scene, or a romantic scene. So, I created mood-based writing playlists for this.

6. Get out of your head and into your body

When I’m feeling stuck or unable to focus, I do something physical—like go for a walk, clean, or even play an instrument. Moving my body helps me reset mentally, and I find it easier to jump back into work afterward.

7. Embody your author persona

Beyoncé has an on-stage persona. Chappell Roan is a persona. So is Childish Gambino. I have an “author persona” that I call on when I need to get out of my own head. She is confident, focused, and never gets distracted. She has zero imposter syndrome. What she has is a deadline, and she’s going to meet it.

8. Set an arbitrary deadline

Speaking of deadlines, I find setting an arbitrary, self-imposed deadline to be very helpful for staying on track. I break big tasks into smaller milestones, like finishing Act 1 or getting to the midpoint of a story. This gives me structure and keeps me motivated when the project-end feels overwhelming or far off.

9. Pick just three things

Every morning I write a new to-do list (with a pen, on paper!) with three tasks on it. I try really hard to have it only be three. This is actually one of my biggest issues, because I love starting new things, and I see opportunities everywhere.

I actually have a Steve Jobs quote on my desk that says: “Focus means saying no to the 100 good ideas there are.”

10. Maintain a running editorial note

I’ve saved this for last, because honestly it has been a transformative practice for me. While writing (especially a first draft), I keep a running editorial note where I jot down ideas, issues to fix, or anything I need to remember for later when I come back to editing. It’s incredibly helpful when I go back to edit because I don’t have to rely on memory to recall important thoughts I had mid-process, and it also saves me from myself if I want to go back and tweak a previous scene, when I actually need to maintain forward momentum.

The mysterious case of the disappearing chat

I’ve heard feedback that a few people are no longer seeing the chat feature in First Draft Pro, which means you might be struggling to get help, suggest features, or just send wave emoji 👋

It seems to be due to changes in certain browsers to include native adblockers. What this means is that your browser’s newly built-in adblocker is blocking the chat bubble.

Scene breaks now work smoothly when importing, and we’ve boosted performance for comments and suggestions.

• Scene breaks when importing — We fixed a bug that was affecting scene splitting when importing your novel. Now, whenever you separate text in a chapter with five dashes, it will be split into different scenes when importing.

• Suggesting edits & making comments in collaboration — We’ve made significant improvements to suggestions and comments to enable the app to handle up to 7000 active comments on a manuscript. So if you rely heavily on comments and suggested edits, you should experience a performance boost!
